Jock itch is a nasty skin infection of the groin. It commonly affects the skin around the penis or vagina, the thighs, the perineum (area between your privates and anus), the scrotum, and sometimes the penis or vagina itself.
The medical term for jock itch is tinea cruris. Tinea is the Latin word for worm, and cruris is the Latin word for leg and/or foot. The jock itch infection is caused by a fungus. This same fungus can also cause athlete’s foot.
Jock itch is caused by coming in contact with another surface that is harboring the fungus. Jock itch mostly lives on human and animal skin, but can also survive in many different materials, including clothing, towels, washcloths, in water, and on the surface of toilets, sinks, and other bathroom surfaces.
The infection can also be transferred from your feet to your groin, or your groin to your feet.
The fungus that causes jock itch thrives in damp, warm areas. It will quickly multiply on your skin, clothes, or any other surface that gives it the warm, damp environment it needs.
In some cases, it has been noted that obese individuals have a more difficult time with their jock itch treatment. Jock itch treatment can also be more difficult for individuals with weakened immune systems or diabetes.
Although there are many jock itch treatments, they will not work if they are not used correctly. Many people don’t take jock itch infections seriously. Because of this, the infection is not treated properly or quickly enough, allowing it to spread and become a severe infection.
Jock itch, if left on the skin for too long, can permanently scar your skin. Sometimes scarring can happen within a few days of the infection becoming severe.
You MUST treat your jock itch infection quickly.
